Sicily
Italy's largest island, rich in Greek and Arab history, with Mount Etna, baroque cities, and stunning beaches.

About Sicily
Sicily isn't just a part of Italy; it's a world of its own. It's a collision of cultures—Greek temples, Arab-Norman mosaics, and Spanish baroque—all set against a backdrop of citrus groves and the smoking peak of Mount Etna. It's gritty, beautiful, and unapologetically alive. You can't "do" Sicily from a top-10 list. You need someone who knows the rhythm of Palermo's markets, the cleanest water at Scopello, and the best granita spot in Taormina that isn't a tourist trap.
Best Time to Visit
May or September. The summer (July-Aug) is scorching. Spring and autumn offer glorious sunshine, warm seas, and fewer crowds at the major ruins like Agrigento.
Local Tips
- Palermo's "other" markets. Vucciria and Ballarò are famous. A local knows to go to Il Capo for the best street food, finding the back-alley friggitoria (fry shop) for the freshest panelle.
- Find the wild beaches. Instead of the crowded beaches near Cefalù, ask about the Vendicari Nature Reserve—a coastal paradise of wild beaches, pink flamingos, and Byzantine ruins.
- See Etna with an expert. Don't just take the cable car. A local can arrange a trip with a geologist to explore recent lava flows and visit a family-run winery on the volcanic slopes that Google will never find.
