About Cinque Terre

This is the ultimate "no-filter-needed" destination. Five vibrant villages are connected by hiking trails, trains, and the sea, all set within a national park. It's beautiful, but it's also one of the most overcrowded spots in Italy. A generic itinerary will have you shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands. A local plan is your ticket to sanity, showing you how to time the trains, which trails are actually open, and where to find the real Ligurian pesto.

Best Time to Visit

May or September. The hiking trails are pleasant, and the towns are lively but not suffocating. Avoid summer weekends at all costs.

Local Tips

  1. Hike the high trail. The main coastal trail ("Sentiero Azzurro") is a logjam. A local knows the "high trails" above the villages, offering jaw-dropping views and connecting you to quiet sanctuaries and vineyards.
  2. Drink the local wine. Ask a local about the sci-trà (local dialect for "crush and go") wine cellars in Manarola for a sunset tasting of the region's rare Sciacchetrà dessert wine.
  3. See it from the sea. Forget fighting for a spot on the tiny beaches. A local can arrange a sunset boat trip from Vernazza—the only way to truly appreciate the scale of the villages from the water as the lights turn on.
