Aosta Valley
Italy's alpine jewel, where Mont Blanc towers over Roman ruins and medieval castles.

About Aosta Valley
Aosta Valley is where Italy meets the Alps at their most dramatic. The smallest region in the country packs an outsized punch: world-class skiing in Courmayeur and Cervinia, medieval castles dotting every valley, and Roman ruins in the capital that rival anything south of the Alps. In summer, the hiking is spectacular—from the Tour du Mont Blanc to wildflower-filled alpine meadows. The cuisine reflects the mountain setting: fontina cheese fondues, hearty carbonade stews, and local wines from the highest vineyards in Europe.
Best Time to Visit
December to March for skiing. July to September for hiking and castle visits. The shoulder months of June and October offer fewer crowds and beautiful light.
Local Tips
- Castle-hop the valley.
Over 100 castles line the main valley. A local knows which ones have the best interiors (Fénis, Issogne) and which hidden ones you can explore almost alone.
- Ride the Skyway Mont Blanc.
This rotating cable car takes you to 3,466m with 360° views of Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and Monte Rosa. A local will tell you to go early morning for clear skies and pair it with lunch at a rifugio.
- Taste the mountain.
Fontina cheese is made only here. A local can arrange a visit to an alpine dairy where herders still make it by hand, followed by a proper fonduta (fondue) dinner.
