Arezzo
An Etruscan hilltop city with Piero della Francesca's greatest frescoes and Italy's best antique market.

About Arezzo
Arezzo is a city of layers. The Etruscans founded it, the Romans expanded it, and the medieval and Renaissance periods gave it some of Tuscany's finest art—above all, Piero della Francesca's Legend of the True Cross fresco cycle in the Basilica di San Francesco, one of the supreme achievements of Italian painting. The sloping Piazza Grande, surrounded by medieval towers and Vasari's elegant loggia, hosts Italy's largest antique market on the first weekend of every month, drawing dealers and collectors from across Europe. Arezzo's gold jewellery tradition dates back millennia, and the surrounding Valdichiana produces Chianina beef (the breed behind bistecca alla fiorentina) and excellent Syrah wines.
Best Time to Visit
April to October. The first weekend of every month for the famous antique market. June brings the Giostra del Saracino jousting tournament. Autumn for wine harvest in the surrounding hills.
Local Tips
- See the Piero della Francesca frescoes.
The Legend of the True Cross cycle is one of the greatest achievements in Western art. A local will book your timed entry and explain the revolutionary use of light and perspective that influenced artists for centuries.
- Hunt for treasures at the antique market.
The first-weekend market fills Piazza Grande and surrounding streets with over 500 dealers. A local knows the best sections for ceramics, vintage prints, and furniture, and the negotiation etiquette.
- Explore the Life Is Beautiful locations.
Roberto Benigni filmed much of his Oscar-winning film in Arezzo's piazzas and streets. A local can walk you through the film locations while revealing the city's genuine wartime history.

Born and raised in Rome, with family roots in Sardinia, I developed a deep appreciation for Italy’s regional diversity and cultural identity from an early age. For years, I have accompanied my guests across Italy, gaining hands-on knowledge of the country’s landscapes, traditions, and local communities. My approach is rooted in authenticity, meaningful connections, and a true understanding of how Italy works beyond the surface.

Ciao! I'm Alessi. I’ve been riding Italy’s roads for over 20 years, from quiet countryside loops to the iconic climbs that feature in the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. If there’s a switchback with a view, I’ve probably been on it! Cycling here isn’t just sport, it’s culture. I can help you choose the right cycling region for your level, the safest and most scenic routes, when to go (and of course- when not to). I reccommend where to stop for the perfect espresso or mid ride pasta - yes this is allowed! I’ll also point you toward the best local bike shops for rentals, tuning, or the emergency tube you didn’t know you needed. Whether you want to do a famous alpine pass, ride through rolling Tuscan hills, or enjoy a coastal ride with incredible views, I’ll help you plan it properly — so you spend less time worrying about logistics and more time enjoying the ride. And yes, I’ll also tell you what to eat along the way. Carbs are not optional.” My specialties are: Road cycling, a bit about gravel cycling, mountain passes, Giro & Tour routes, local trattorias, cycling culture, espresso stops.
