Assisi
St. Francis's birthplace—a pilgrimage town of frescoed basilicas and timeless Umbrian peace.

About Assisi
Assisi is one of Italy's most important spiritual sites and one of its most beautiful small towns. The birthplace of St. Francis (and St. Clare), it's dominated by the magnificent Basilica di San Francesco, whose upper and lower churches contain fresco cycles by Giotto, Cimabue, and Simone Martini that are among the greatest achievements of medieval art. But Assisi is more than a pilgrimage: the pink-stone town climbs a hillside of Monte Subasio, its medieval streets opening onto panoramic views of the Umbrian plain below. The Roman Temple of Minerva stands virtually intact in the main piazza, and the surrounding countryside offers walks through olive groves and wildflower meadows that St. Francis himself would have known.
Best Time to Visit
April to June or September to October. Easter and the Feast of St. Francis (October 4) draw large crowds but are deeply atmospheric. May brings the Calendimaggio medieval festival. Spring wildflowers on Monte Subasio are extraordinary.
Local Tips
- See the Giotto frescoes at first light.
The Basilica's upper church opens early and is quietest in the first hour. A local will position you in the nave where the morning light brings Giotto's Life of St. Francis cycle to life in ways no photograph can capture.
- Hike Monte Subasio.
The mountain above Assisi is where St. Francis retreated to pray, and the trails through wildflower meadows and forests are deeply peaceful. A local knows the path to the Eremo delle Carceri hermitage and the panoramic summit.
- Explore the Roman underground.
Beneath the Piazza del Comune lies a Roman forum with the Temple of Minerva above—remarkably intact. A local can guide you through the underground excavations and explain how Roman Asisium became medieval Assisi.

Born and raised in Rome, with family roots in Sardinia, I developed a deep appreciation for Italy’s regional diversity and cultural identity from an early age. For years, I have accompanied my guests across Italy, gaining hands-on knowledge of the country’s landscapes, traditions, and local communities. My approach is rooted in authenticity, meaningful connections, and a true understanding of how Italy works beyond the surface.

Hello, I’m Eleonora. I was born in Tuscany, just outside Florence, where growing up surrounded by history, shaped my curiosity and love for art. I studied Art History at the University of Florence, specializing in the Renaissance. I began guiding students early on, and it was there that I developed a passion for storytelling — because there is nothing more challenging than engaging teenagers and young adults. I later expanded my focus to the broader history of Italy, leading groups throughout the country, from Venice to Sicily. Eventually, I moved to Rome, where I now work as an expert tour guide, leading visits to the city’s most iconic sites, including the Vatican and the Colosseum, as well as off the beaten path, to some of its hidden gems. In my free time I love to drive around Italy to its myriad hilltop medieval towns, where each one is a new discovery, both architectural and natural and also, of course, culinary! Over the years, many travelers have asked me for advice and suggestions to help plan the rest of their itineraries. That is why I’m happy to connect with you even before your trip begins, sharing my insights and helping you make the most of your time in Italy.
