Bari
A gritty, authentic port city where grandmothers make orecchiette in the street.

About Bari
Bari is having a moment. The capital of Apulia has shed its rough reputation to emerge as one of southern Italy's most compelling cities. The old town—Bari Vecchia—is a labyrinth of narrow alleys where elderly women still roll orecchiette pasta on tables outside their front doors and sell them to passers-by. The Basilica of San Nicola houses the relics of St. Nicholas (yes, Santa Claus), drawing pilgrims from around the world. The new town, with its elegant 19th-century grid, offers excellent shopping and restaurants. And the lungomare—Bari's sweeping seafront promenade—is one of the finest in Italy, especially at sunset.
Best Time to Visit
April to June or September to October. May brings the Festa di San Nicola with a dramatic sea procession. Summer is hot but the sea breeze helps. Winter is mild and crowd-free.
Local Tips
- Watch the pasta ladies.
In the Arco Basso area of Bari Vecchia, grandmothers make orecchiette on the street. A local knows the best time to visit and can arrange a pasta-making lesson with one of these legendary home cooks.
- Eat raw seafood like a Barese.
Bari's crudo tradition is legendary—sea urchins, octopus, and prawns eaten raw at the fish market. A local will take you to the right stalls and teach you how to eat polpo crudo without flinching.
- Walk the lungomare at golden hour.
Bari's seafront promenade stretches for kilometres along the Adriatic. A local will time a walk for sunset, ending at a bar in the old harbour for a Peroni and focaccia barese—the city's iconic snack.

For years, I have accompanied my guests across Italy, gaining hands-on knowledge of the country’s landscapes, traditions, and local communities. My approach is rooted in authenticity, meaningful connections, and a true understanding of how Italy works beyond the surface.

Ciao! I'm Isabella From Puglia. I grew up in a small town near Ostuni and have spent my whole life exploring every corner of Puglia — from the whitewashed streets of Locorotondo to secret coves along the Salento coast. I know where to find the best orecchiette, the most scenic sunset aperitivos, and beach clubs where locals actually go! I love helping tourists experience Puglia’s rhythm — slow, authentic, and full of warmth.

I am a local tour guide with over twenty years of experience in Venice and it’s lagoon. As a native of the area and a resident nearby, I have a deep and authentic connection with this extraordinary land, which I know not only historically and artistically, but also in its most authentic and everyday aspects.
