Cogne
Gateway to Gran Paradiso, Italy's oldest national park, in a pristine Alpine valley.

About Cogne
Cogne is a tranquil Alpine village at the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park—Italy's first national park, established in 1922 to protect the Alpine ibex. The village sits at 1,534 metres on a broad, sunny meadow surrounded by peaks, with the dramatic Lillaz waterfall cascading nearby. In winter, Cogne is famous for cross-country skiing on 80km of perfectly groomed trails across the Prato di Sant'Orso meadows. In summer, the hiking is spectacular: trails wind through ibex-filled valleys, past wildflower meadows, and up to high-altitude lakes reflecting glaciated peaks. The village preserves a tradition of tombolo lace-making that's been practised here for centuries.
Best Time to Visit
December to March for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. June to September for hiking in Gran Paradiso—July brings the best wildflowers. The ice climbing festival in January attracts climbers worldwide.
Local Tips
- Spot ibex in Gran Paradiso.
The park was created to save the Alpine ibex from extinction. A local guide knows exactly which valleys and times of day to find these magnificent mountain goats posing on rocky outcrops.
- Ski the Nordic trails.
Cogne's cross-country skiing across the Prato di Sant'Orso is world-class. A local will point you to the best loops for your level and the rifugio where you can warm up with a bombardino (egg-nog ski drink).
- Visit the Lillaz waterfall.
This three-tiered waterfall just outside Cogne is spectacular in spring snowmelt. A local knows the trail that leads to the upper tier, where you can sit above the falls with views down the valley.
