Como
Alpine glamour, opulent villas, and that famous Y-shaped lake.

About Como
Lake Como is where the Alps meet the Mediterranean. It's a place of deep blue waters, dramatic mountain backdrops, and impossibly elegant villas draped in wisteria. From the celebrity-spotting in Cernobbio to the picture-perfect streets of Bellagio, this is a destination designed for slowing down. But it's easy to get stuck in the "ferry triangle." A local can design a plan that gets you onto a vintage Riva boat, into the private gardens, and up the funiculars for views you'll never forget.
Best Time to Visit
May to September. The gardens are in full bloom in spring, while the lake is perfect for swimming in summer. Many villas and hotels close down in winter.
Local Tips
- Stay in Varenna, not Bellagio.
Bellagio is beautiful but busy. A local will tell you to stay in Varenna—just as beautiful, more romantic, and with better train connections—and visit Bellagio as a day trip.
- Find the hidden waterfall.
Everyone sees the villas from the ferry. A local can arrange a private boat to take you to Nesso, a tiny, overlooked village with a waterfall cascading into a hidden gorge.
- Eat in a crotto.
Instead of an overpriced lakeside lunch, ask a local to book a crotto—a traditional restaurant built into natural caves in the hills above the lake, serving rustic, authentic food.

Nandor

Como, Milan +3
I help travelers discover the Italian Lakes, from the villages of Lake Como to the streets of Milan through the stories that shaped them. I’m Nándor, a professional tour leader and guide based in Northern Italy, guiding travelers across Milan, Lake Como, and Lago Maggiore. Originally from Hungary, I’ve spent years leading tours across Europe and now focus on sharing the culture, landscapes, and hidden corners of Northern Italy. I love connecting places with the history behind them, from Milan’s historic streets to medieval lake towns, monasteries, and mountain viewpoints I’m also passionate about storytelling and games. I design immersive experiences and enjoy board games, strategy games, and historical stories, which means I naturally approach travel as a journey full of characters, history, and discovery. When I’m not guiding, you’ll usually find me kayaking on Lago Maggiore, hiking in the hills above the lake, or researching the region's medieval history.
