Gubbio
A beautifully preserved medieval town famed for ceramics, candle races, and an air of timeless mystery.

About Gubbio
Gubbio is medieval Umbria at its most atmospheric. This grey stone town climbs the slopes of Monte Ingino, its parallel streets connected by steep stairways and overlooked by the massive Palazzo dei Consoli, which houses the mysterious Iguvine Tablets—seven bronze tablets inscribed with the most important ancient Umbrian text ever found. The town's traditions are fierce: the Corsa dei Ceri (May 15) sees three teams racing massive wooden candle-shaped structures up the mountain in one of Italy's most dramatic festivals. The ceramics tradition here dates back centuries—the town gave its name to a style of lustred maiolica—and the surrounding forests offer walks through countryside little changed since the Middle Ages.
Best Time to Visit
May for the Corsa dei Ceri festival. April to October for exploring and hiking. December brings the world's largest Christmas tree, created with lights on Monte Ingino. Autumn for truffle and mushroom season.
Local Tips
- See the Corsa dei Ceri.
On May 15, three teams race enormous wooden 'candles' up the mountain in a breathless, chaotic spectacle. A local will explain the ancient rivalries and position you at the most thrilling point of the course.
- Visit a ceramics workshop.
Gubbio's maiolica ceramics tradition dates to the 14th century. A local can take you inside a workshop where artisans still use the lustreware technique that made Gubbio famous and let you try your hand at painting.
- Ride the Funivia up Monte Ingino.
The open-cage cable car to the top of Monte Ingino is an experience in itself—thrilling and slightly terrifying. A local will combine the ride with a visit to the Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo at the summit and the panoramic walk back down.
