Lecce
The Florence of the South, dripping in golden baroque and surrounded by olive groves.

About Lecce
Lecce is a baroque fantasy carved in warm, golden limestone. Every church, palace, and courtyard in the centro storico seems to compete for the most elaborate ornamentation—cherubs, flowers, mythical creatures, and columns spiralling into the Salento sky. Yet Lecce never feels like a museum. It's a vibrant university city with excellent restaurants, lively piazzas, and a thriving artisan scene. The local pietra leccese (Lecce stone) is so soft that craftsmen still carve it by hand, continuing a tradition that peaked in the 17th century. Beyond the city, the Salento peninsula stretches south to where the Adriatic meets the Ionian, with some of Italy's most beautiful beaches.
Best Time to Visit
May to June or September to October. The Salento beaches are best from June to September. August is hot and crowded. The summer Notte della Taranta folk festival in nearby Melpignano is unforgettable.
Local Tips
- See the baroque by night.
Lecce's churches are stunning by day, but the warm stone glows magically under night lighting. A local will plan an evening passeggiata through the lamplit streets, ending with a pasticciotto pastry and caffè leccese.
- Visit a papier-mâché workshop.
Lecce has been a centre of cartapesta (papier-mâché) artistry for centuries. A local can take you inside a workshop where craftsmen still create religious statues and decorative pieces using centuries-old techniques.
- Dance the pizzica.
The Salento's traditional pizzica dance has roots in tarantism—the belief that a tarantula's bite could only be cured by frenzied dancing. A local knows where to experience authentic pizzica nights, not tourist shows.

Ciao! I'm Isabella From Puglia. I grew up in a small town near Ostuni and have spent my whole life exploring every corner of Puglia — from the whitewashed streets of Locorotondo to secret coves along the Salento coast. I know where to find the best orecchiette, the most scenic sunset aperitivos, and beach clubs where locals actually go! I love helping tourists experience Puglia’s rhythm — slow, authentic, and full of warmth.
