Orvieto
A cliff-top city with a jaw-dropping Gothic cathedral and an underground labyrinth of Etruscan caves.

About Orvieto
Orvieto rises on a sheer tufa cliff above the Umbrian plain like a natural fortress—which is exactly what it was for the Etruscans, Romans, and medieval popes who sheltered here. The Duomo is Orvieto's showpiece: a Gothic cathedral whose striped marble facade is covered in golden mosaics and sculptural detail that takes your breath away, while inside, Luca Signorelli's Last Judgement frescoes in the San Brizio Chapel influenced Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Below the surface, Orvieto hides an extraordinary underground world of Etruscan caves, medieval tunnels, and Renaissance wells carved into the volcanic tufa over 2,500 years. The surrounding countryside produces the excellent Orvieto Classico white wine.
Best Time to Visit
April to October. Umbria Jazz Winter in December-January brings jazz to atmospheric venues. The Corpus Christi celebration features a beautiful historical procession. Spring and autumn are ideal for wine touring.
Local Tips
- See the Duomo facade at sunset.
The golden mosaics on the cathedral facade catch the late afternoon sun and literally glow. A local will time your arrival for the best light and then take you inside for Signorelli's Last Judgement in the quiet of closing time.
- Go underground.
Orvieto Underground reveals 2,500 years of tunnels, caves, and wells carved into the tufa cliff. A local can arrange the tour that goes beyond the standard route to see Etruscan pigeon coops and medieval olive presses.
- Taste Orvieto Classico at the source.
The vineyards surrounding the cliff produce one of Italy's most historic white wines. A local knows the small producers who still age wine in tufa caves and the best pairing with Umbrian truffles and pecorino.

Born and raised in Rome, with family roots in Sardinia, I developed a deep appreciation for Italy’s regional diversity and cultural identity from an early age. For years, I have accompanied my guests across Italy, gaining hands-on knowledge of the country’s landscapes, traditions, and local communities. My approach is rooted in authenticity, meaningful connections, and a true understanding of how Italy works beyond the surface.

Hello, I’m Eleonora. I was born in Tuscany, just outside Florence, where growing up surrounded by history, shaped my curiosity and love for art. I studied Art History at the University of Florence, specializing in the Renaissance. I began guiding students early on, and it was there that I developed a passion for storytelling — because there is nothing more challenging than engaging teenagers and young adults. I later expanded my focus to the broader history of Italy, leading groups throughout the country, from Venice to Sicily. Eventually, I moved to Rome, where I now work as an expert tour guide, leading visits to the city’s most iconic sites, including the Vatican and the Colosseum, as well as off the beaten path, to some of its hidden gems. In my free time I love to drive around Italy to its myriad hilltop medieval towns, where each one is a new discovery, both architectural and natural and also, of course, culinary! Over the years, many travelers have asked me for advice and suggestions to help plan the rest of their itineraries. That is why I’m happy to connect with you even before your trip begins, sharing my insights and helping you make the most of your time in Italy.
