Potenza
Italy's highest regional capital, perched above the clouds in the Lucanian mountains.

About Potenza
Potenza is a city that rewards the curious. At 819 metres, it's the highest regional capital in Italy, sitting on a narrow ridge with views across forested mountains in every direction. The centro storico follows the ridge like a spine, with staircases and escalators connecting the upper old town to the modern quarters below. Earthquakes have shaped its architecture—rebuilt multiple times, the city mixes medieval fragments with 19th-century elegance. Potenza is an ideal base for exploring Basilicata's wild interior: the Lucanian Dolomites, the Vulture wine country, and the haunting villages of the Calanchi badlands are all within easy reach.
Best Time to Visit
May to October for exploring the surrounding mountains and villages. The San Gerardo festival in late May features a dramatic torchlit parade. Autumn brings mushroom and chestnut season.
Local Tips
- Ride the escalators through history.
Potenza's network of public escalators and moving walkways connects the hilltop old town to the valley below. A local can turn the ride into a tour through different centuries of architecture.
- Explore the Vulture wine country.
Monte Vulture, an extinct volcano north of Potenza, produces the outstanding Aglianico del Vulture. A local knows the small cantinas in Barile and Rionero where tastings happen in volcanic caves.
- Find the Lucanian Dolomites.
The jagged peaks around Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa are spectacular. A local can arrange the Flight of the Angel zip line between the two villages and a lunch of local lamb in one of the tiny trattorias.
