Salerno
Gateway to the Amalfi Coast, with a medieval medical school and Italy's most spectacular Christmas lights.

About Salerno
Salerno has emerged from the shadow of nearby Naples and the Amalfi Coast to become a destination in its own right. The city's medieval centro storico—anchored by a Norman cathedral with stunning Byzantine mosaics—climbs from a long, attractive lungomare up towards an Arechi castle with panoramic views. Salerno was home to the world's first medical school (the Schola Medica Salernitana, founded in the 9th century), and its intellectual heritage lives on in a vibrant university atmosphere. The city is also the most practical base for exploring the Amalfi Coast without the price tag, with regular ferries to Positano and Amalfi. In winter, the famous Luci d'Artista Christmas light installations transform the entire city.
Best Time to Visit
May to October for the coast and ferries. November to January for the spectacular Luci d'Artista light festival. Spring is perfect for exploring the old town and gardens without summer heat.
Local Tips
- Use Salerno as your Amalfi base.
Hotels here cost a fraction of Positano or Amalfi, and the ferry connections are excellent. A local will plan your coast day trips to avoid the worst crowds and save you hundreds on accommodation.
- See the Christmas lights.
Salerno's Luci d'Artista (November-January) transforms the city into a dazzling light installation. A local will map the best walking route through millions of lights, ending with a hot chocolate in the old town.
- Explore the Giardino della Minerva.
This medieval botanical garden—connected to Europe's first medical school—terraces down the hillside with views over the Gulf. A local can explain the medicinal plants and the garden's extraordinary historical significance.
