Tropea
A cliff-top paradise with white beaches, turquoise water, and the famous red onion.

About Tropea
Tropea is the jewel of Calabria's Costa degli Dei—the Coast of the Gods. The old town perches on a dramatic cliff above a beach of fine white sand and impossibly blue water, with the medieval Santa Maria dell'Isola church sitting on a rocky promontory that looks like it belongs in a fantasy novel. The town itself is a maze of Norman-era streets, baroque palaces, and restaurants serving the local speciality: the Cipolla Rossa di Tropea, a sweet red onion so famous it has its own festival. Beyond the main beach, boat tours reveal hidden coves and sea caves along the jagged coastline towards Capo Vaticano.
Best Time to Visit
June to September for swimming and beach life. July and August are busy but vibrant. May and October offer warm weather without the crowds. The red onion festival in August is a local highlight.
Local Tips
- Visit Santa Maria dell'Isola at sunset.
The church on the rocky promontory is Tropea's most iconic image. A local will tell you to climb the steps to the church garden at sunset for views that are almost unfairly beautiful.
- Take a boat to Capo Vaticano.
The coastline south of Tropea hides spectacular sea caves and deserted coves. A local can arrange a boat tour from the marina with swimming stops at beaches inaccessible by land.
- Taste the famous red onion.
Tropea's sweet red onion features in everything from frittatas to marmalade to gelato. A local knows the best restaurants showcasing this ingredient and the farms where you can buy them fresh from the field.
